Scientists prepare to move Doomsday Clock forward

Fri Jan 12, 3:12 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The keepers of the "Doomsday Clock" plan to move its hands forward next Wednesday to reflect what they call worsening nuclear and climate threats to the world.

The symbolic clock, maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, currently is set at seven minutes to midnight, with midnight marking global catastrophe.

How long have those posers been doing this clock thing, 50 years? Does anybody still buy this? I've been waiting for "midnight" since the day I was born.

It seems like they always trot the clock out when they're trying to pressure the US to surrender to its enemies. First it was to encourage nuclear surrender to the Soviets, now it's economic surrender to Red China via "global warming" amelioration. Anybody who believes this crap is cuckoo.

Doomsday Clock Set at 5 'Til Midnight

Tick, tock ... The Doomsday Clock is a metaphor for threats to humanity from technology.
The iconic Doomsday Clock remains poised at five minutes until midnight, the Science and
Security Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced today (Jan. 14).

Fortunately, I need to get to bed by 11 o'clock tonight. But thanks for the warning, anyway.

Nothing happened last night. Do I have to go through this every night?

Does that mean that it might just as well be set at a million years?

    .......and if something happens earlier.........ooops!

Doomsday Clock Set at 3 Minutes to Midnight
That's the grim outlook from board members of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Frustrated with a lack of international action to address climate change and shrink nuclear arsenals, they decided today (Jan. 22) to push the minute hand of their iconic "Doomsday Clock" to 11:57 p.m. It's the first time the clock hands have moved in three years; since 2012, the clock had been fixed at 5 minutes to symbolic doom, midnight.
