    Default Law of Diminishing Returns

Finally, some interesting dialog with Bosox, Freighter, and Wave at BJTF.

What you guys are doing is invaluable...bouncing ideas off each other. Each comes with a different perspective.

I bet NBA. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching college basketball. Sometimes I will pick up on something that helps win more NBA bets.

I only play single deck straight up. But I enjoy reading some intellect instead of the rah rah look at me bullshit.

    Great job guys.

    Default Insurance

I noticed another insurance thread at BJTF.

Don S and/or Bosox. Can u please tell me what TC you would insure a blackjack. 20? 19? 11? 10?

No matter what charts say. Im interested in what you do. Thank you in advance for your answer.

Bosox writes: Moses, regarding taking insurance, I only take it if the count calls for it. The one possible exception take an even-money bet if I am being watched with a close borderline dicision anyway.

Moses writes: Thanks for reply. I take even money on a blackjack when the count is even or plus. But refuse it when the count is negative. This seems to minimize scrutiny.

Now, Ins. is warranted on TC +3 for HiLo? So, just to clarify, you wouldnt insure say A9 at TC +2? It's something Im working on. A TC +2.5 for say Wong Halves is about 60% high cards remaining and 40% low.

If you played two hands and received two aces on one hand and an ace and a four on the other hand with a dealer ace showing, it's to your advantage to insure. The ratio of non-tens (A-9) to ten cards (10-K) is 31-16, better than the 2-1 payout. One good reason to not use Hi-Lo, its count is -3.

    That's composition dependent but correct.

I remember playing in SD in Tunica, and if the first hand had a dealer ace up, even the plops were alsking everyone if they had any tens. SD is easy.

Moses writes: JSTAT makes a good point for example. SD is easy? Not when you have to deal with limitations and preferential shuffling.

Firstly, you wouldnt play two hands off the top of the deck. The bet size is double. Instead of one hand at $25 you must play two at $50 each. Now you've given up pen for $100 instead of $25. And you cant view the 2nd hand until play is finished on the first hand.

OK, let's assume we are playing with a plop and peek at those cards. We are then playing $25 a hand...This audience is tough LOL

I understand what you are saying JSTAT. Bosox once motivatated me to build my entire game around Insurance. Thus the 10 count is vital. But I decided I could pull back on "perfect" insurance and adjust to get more out of other areas.

Did my eyes deceive me, or did you post that you have backed away from your Modified Halves Count (2 and 7 switch tag values), and revert back to your (not the ApeMan’s) columnar count? If so, are you experiencing any perceived gains?

Hi SFL. True I have battered back and forth between the methods. Part of the reason for this is I cannot run Sims on column counts. A problem, as we've talked about, is getting enough strong deck compositions to offset the volatility with spread limitations.

If I had to guess I'd say the end result is close to the same. But a strange twist is the conventional method has lower volatility with a higher percentage of large bets.
