FROM PM: I really don't know whether he can eves drop on PM? Can he? I'm willing to bet yes.
FROM PM: Maybe an explanation to the world of what norm can do on his site and how unsafe it is?I'm sure word will spread fast if someone would give a small seminar on the unsafe ness of the "humble servant behind the curtains" site.
No seminar necessary, read vBulletin thread -

Its a free plugin, ZG. Did you already install it?
What vB owner wouldn't install it? In fact, the NSA will soon require that all vB owners install it!

Read PMs (PM Management Suite Lite)
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This hack can only be used by Super Administrators.
    What Does This Hack Do?
This version is a major update (a virtual re-write, there is very little original code left) of Dream's Read PMs hack v0.7. Permission for me to release this hack is shown here, and blessings are given by Dream here.
This hack will allow you as a Super Administrator to read your member's private messages.
Please, lets not get into a discussion in this support thread about the suitability of this hack and invading privacy etc, (I have seen this happen in other threads, so, I am pre-empting people before it starts). If you have a moral objection to this hack, please don't comment on it, just don't install it, it is as simple as that. This hack is here for people who want to use it, I have no opinion about it one way or the other.

    Default Disturbing indeed

I wonder if this is the power that I've been using to be different people all at once...

Just goes to show that the standards for privacy are inherently lower on the internet for whatever reasons, and it takes a moralist in a sense to enforce proper privacy restrictions.

I suspect Norm reads instant messages, not necessarily the private email. Guy trolls different forums to find out what is being said EVERY day AND makes a strong effort to influence/control their opinion? And yet this same person doesn't enable an easy hack to monitor chatter on his own site?

I felt like literally the only evidence he had to accuse me of being a Bozo troublemaker would have been our single conversation on PM. He stated essentially that we had been talking without having any evidence of it. It sort of flew in the face of what was a normal view of things considering that I was already vigorously defending you; it didn't so much matter being able to talk to you about it or not. He implied that I couldn't form a thought without your consult and even then it wasn't an independent thought, just rehashed cabbage...

Anytime I said something negative in an instant message, I got bitched out the next day over nothing. Coincidence? I don't know, but it certainly made me think about it.

Many, a best kept secret. But any forum webmaster can access through the mySql php.admin. The plugin just extends that privilege to the super-mod.

Default So it's not a question of software

Rather, it's a question of ethics or morals.

Second question, therefore, does anyone think we should assume anonymity as a default condition for being on a forum? It is a quite accepted premise of new social networking platforms that virtual anything is available to anyone besides PMs and even then, any admin has complete access, no super-mod adjustments necessary. So my question is really, and I'm not being silly, is there anything in internet ethics literature or anywhere else (for lack of knowledge about the subject) that makes it clear that the assumption of privacy should be there in the first place as least as regards the older modalities of communication?

Ethics dictate they are private. It's against the law to read them. But absent a confession, no one would ever know.
