near the Gaza Strip. Photo: Getty Images

Hamas terrorists launched three powerful rockets at an Israeli nuclear power plant on Wednesday — a terrifying escalation of hostilities in the increasingly violent conflict.

But a nuclear disaster was averted when Israel’s vaunted Iron Dome defense system shot one of the rockets out of the sky and the other two missed their targets and detonated on the ground without causing any injuries.

Extremists from Hamas’ fanatical Qassam Brigades boasted that they had launched the long-range, M-75 rockets from the Gaza Strip to the Israeli city of Dimona hoping to damage or destroy the reactor, about 47 miles away.

But the Iron Dome — which has had a remarkable success rate of about 90 percent during the recent conflict — and the terrorists’ poor targeting prevented the reactor from being damaged.

The 13-inch (333-millimeter) M-75 rockets have a range of about 50 miles and can reach most of central Israel.

It was the first time that rockets have hit Dimona, one of Israel’s most sensitive areas because of the reactor’s location.

The rockets fired at the nuke plant were among 74 that rained down on cities across the country Wednesday, the Israeli military said.

Crying “God is great,” Palestinians in Gaza cheered as the rockets streaked overhead toward cities across Israel.

An angry Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would continue escalating attacks to stop the Hamas barrage and ordered the military to “take off the gloves” in what it is calling Operation Protective Edge.

“The army is ready for all possibilities,” Netanyahu said after holding a meeting of his security cabinet.

“Hamas will pay a heavy price for firing toward Israeli citizens. The security of Israel’s citizens comes first. The operation will expand and continue until the fire toward our towns stops and quiet returns.”

Hamas also fired a Syrian-made rocket into Hadera — about 78 miles from Gaza, marking the deepest penetration into the country’s interior yet.

“Our enemies have developed, and it is getting scary,” resident Maayan From, 25, said of Hamas’ ability to strike deep into the country. “We have to put an end to this.”

Other Israeli leaders warned a ground invasion could be imminent.

“Despite the fact it will be hard, complicated and costly, we will have to take over Gaza temporarily, for a few weeks, to cut off the strengthening of this terror army,” Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s intelligence minister, told Israel Radio. “If you ask my humble opinion, a significant operation like this is approaching.”

An Israeli military spokesman said the rocket that struck Hadera was an M-302 and was similar to 40 others that were found on a ship intercepted by the Israeli navy in the Red Sea in March.

The rockets — with a range of more than 100 miles — were made in Syria and shipped by Iran and were on their way to Gaza militants, Israel said.

Despite the interception, Hamas still holds dozens of the deadly rockets, which pack lethal warheads of up to 385 pounds.

Israel has attacked more than 560 targets in Gaza during the past two days.

But in an effort to prevent civilian casualties, the Israeli military makes warning phone calls to militants’ homes, telling them to get out immediately because the building is going to be bombed. Warning leaflets are also dropped from the air before specific areas are attacked.

Palestinian medics say 49 people have been killed in Gaza, including 22 on Wednesday.

Israel authorized a call-up of as many as 40,000 reservists, many of whom would be assigned to the West Bank to free up active-duty personnel for Gaza, where Israeli tanks are already massing along the border. http://nypost.com/2014/07/10/day-of-...clear-reactor/

    Default Hamas

Desperate people do desperate things. Israel made it own bed, now it must lye in it.

Iron dome is totally funded by me, a US taxpayer, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars that could far better be used to supply water to the poor people in Bankrupt Detroit, this is one reason why I am now completely fed up with Zionist and Israel.

U.S. use of Israel as a bulwark is a failed policy ...

As we have already seen, the worst price for this latest round of violence will be paid by the civilian population of Gaza, almost 2 million people fenced into a slice of arid seacoast with roughly the same land area as the city of Detroit. But for those of us in the West, and especially in the United States, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict plays out in public discourse, over and over again, as a drama of rhetoric and propaganda, accusation and counter-accusation.

Both in the real conflict on the ground and the ideological conflict for hearts and minds, both sides feel misunderstood and unfairly stigmatized – and if you’re willing or able to take the long view, they both have a point. Along with every other American journalist, I received emails this week from Arab-American groups complaining about the pro-Israeli bias of the mainstream media, and from Jewish activists eager to elucidate President Obama’s “pro-Muslim agenda” and his long-term campaign to undermine Israel.

What do we talk about when we talk about Israel? Perhaps this is an index of our bottomless narcissism, but the not-so-secret subtext of both pro-Israel and anti-Israel arguments is that they’re really debates about America and its role in the world. Israel is of course closely tied to the U.S. in military, economic, cultural and psychological terms, and in all likelihood would not exist if not for six-plus decades of staunch American support.

Although it’s a distinctive society in many ways, Israel is also a familiar kind of place – a Westernized consumer democracy of yoga classes, designer cocktails and gay pride parades – in a way no Islamic Middle Eastern country even approaches. Israel can be read as an American proxy state, a wayward bastard child or (in the paranoid view) as a sinister force behind American politics, pulling the superpower’s strings. However you understand this “special relationship,” the genetic kinship is unmistakable.

Dimona? Isn't that where Israel manufactured much of their illegal nuclear stockpile using stolen U.S. nuke-tech secrets?

I have no idea, but I do know that trying to cause a nuclear disaster is an evil deed. Bad enough that they value women and children so little that they deliberately place them in harm's way for propaganda and strategic purposes.

Relax. Mordechai Vanunu (pictured) is the Israeli whistleblower who exposed what goes on in Dimona. (Mossad kidnapped him from Rome and he served 18 years in an Israeli prison, released in 2004). The secret Dimona stuff he said, is deep underground. That makes it extremely unlikely to be threatened by puny Hamas rockets, even if one did get through Iron Dome.

Can you cite a credible source?

Can you cite a credible source that says that Israel is deliberately going out of its way to kill children and women? The mere fact that so many children are being killed corroborates the reports that HAMAS as it always has is locating its launch sites at hospitals, schools and peoples homes. This is why so many in the Middles east are distancing themselves from HAMAS. If they were not so located, it would not be that hard for Israel to take them out. As it is, do you think Israel likes to announce ahead of time that they are going to strike a particular area so that people have time to leave the danger zone? That also gives HAMAS time to leave the area. Israel does not want a reputation for killing children. This would be stupid of them to do public relations-wise, and Israel is not stupid.

So you believe that these numbers, if correct, are due (mostly) to Hamas using children (hospitals, schools, etc.) as shields?

Vox: Hamas Uses Human Shields so Israel Should Stand Down
    by John Sexton
    17 Jul 2014
    4

Vox's Max Fisher has a story today which acknowledges that, yes, Hamas is a group of terrorists using human shields, including children, in its war against Israel. But why, Vox asks, does Israel insist on fighting back.

Only the people responsible can know for sure why Palestinian militants would use civilian buildings, but any real possibility is bad. Maybe militant groups use civilian buildings like this UN school simply because they don't mind the danger this creates for the Palestinians they claim to protect. Maybe it's because they are hoping that the rockets will be safer in a UN school because Israel won't want to bomb it, which means using Palestinians kids and teachers as human shields. An argument you hear from Hamas's harshest critics is that they are hoping Israel will target the schools, thus rallying people to their side.
    [...]
Here's the thing, though: while incidents like this force Israel to decide between bombing civilian structures or allowing Hamas to use those structures as rocket storage depots, it does not actually force Israel to choose to bomb civilian buildings. It is entirely within Israel's power to not bomb civilian buildings.

Fisher is right of course. There's nothing forcing Israel to respond. They certainly could sit back and decide that, for the sake of Palestinian civilians, they will henceforth wink at Hamas storing rockets in schools or mosques.

Of course those rockets will be fired eventually. The threat of a rocket once stored at a school in Gaza landing on a school in Israel is real. But Fisher's thinking doesn't seem to progress to what comes next. He asks us to consider a world in which Israel always stands down but then fails to actually consider it himself.

It's not hard to imagine what it would be like: Israel in a constant state of alert. Life under militant terrorism with no end in sight. The real question is why an entire population should be asked to accept such a state of existence when it has the ability to stop it. It's a question Fisher doesn't ask presumably because he does not have an answer to offer.

Default Hamas Interior Minister Boasts of Using Elderly and Children as Human Shields

Hamas Interior Minister Boasts of Using Elderly and Children as Human Shields
November 18, 2012 by Daniel Greenfield

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

    Name: Fathi-Hamad.jpg
Views: 52
Size: 30.3 KB

This clip from Fathi Hamad, the Hamas Interior Minister in Gaza, is a few years old, but all too relevant in this current conflict, as he boasts of Hamas’ willingness and even eagerness to use children and the elderly as human shields.

“For the Palestinian people, death has become an industry, at which women excel, and so do all the people living on this land. The elderly excel at this, and so do the mujahideen and the children. This is why they have formed human shields of the women, the children, the elderly, and the mujahideen, in order to challenge the Zionist bombing machine. It is as if they were saying to the Zionist enemy: ‘We desire death like you desire life.’”

The phrase “Industry of Death” is all too accurate and is an admission of the tactics of Hamas and Fatah. That is what we are seeing on the ground in Gaza.

Human shields does not just refer to a policy of using civilians as cover in firefights, but to deliberately planting civilians, including children, in locations likely to be targeted in order to manufacture atrocities. We will be seeing more and more of that as this conflict progresses.

The IDF thought it would be easy again, like 2012. After all, Gaza is just a large prison with 1.5M inmates, all subhumans and their children, all living in poverty and squalor. In this invasion, the Jews got a surprise: these Hamas baboons know how to make and detonate IEDs and they also have anti-tank and probably RPGs. This time, the IDF is decidedly more nervous... Must be time for them to break out their white phosphorous shells they said they did not use last time. [They lied. We have pictures.]
