Default 50 Reasons Why the Christian God is Imaginary

Proof #51 - Think about God and Baal

In the Bible, in the book of 1 Kings, in chapter 18, there is a fascinating story about God and Elijah. In this story, we have Elijah, as a prophet of the Lord, meeting with Ahab, a powerful king. Obadiah is a messenger. The story starts out like this:

[16] So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. [17] When he saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?"
[18] "I have not made trouble for Israel," Elijah replied. "But you and your father's family have. You have abandoned the LORD's commands and have followed the Baals. [19] Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table." [20] So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

[21] Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him."

This is a fascinating situation. Ahab and his people have started following a god named Baal instead of Elijah's God. And Elijah wants to prove to Ahab that Baal is an imaginary god. So Elijah sets up a challenge:
[22] Then Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the LORD's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.

[23] Get two bulls for us. Let them choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. [24] Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God."
Then all the people said, "What you say is good."

[25] Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire." [26] So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. "O Baal, answer us!" they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

[27] At noon Elijah began to taunt them. "Shout louder!" he said. "Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened." [28] So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. [29] Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

[30] Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come here to me." They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which was in ruins. [31] Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, "Your name shall be Israel." [32] With the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs [a] of seed. [33] He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, "Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood."
[34] "Do it again," he said, and they did it again.

"Do it a third time," he ordered, and they did it the third time. [35] The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
[36] At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. [37] Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again."

[38] Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
[39] When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, "The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!"
On command, the Lord does Elijah's bidding and proves that he exists by bringing all-consuming fire upon the altar. The fire even vaporizes the stones! It is an amazing display, and the people accept that Baal is imaginary and God is real.

What happens to the prophets of the false god? They get the death sentence:

[40] Then Elijah commanded them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let anyone get away!" They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

What we see here is fascinating: the Bible is laying down the criteria for proving that a "god" is real, and then demonstrating the punishment for those who teach about false gods. And the criteria is very simple: The "god" in question has to prove its existence through demonstrable actions in our world. The reason that Ahab's people were supposed to believe in God rather than Baal is because, on command, God proved his existence. Baal, being imaginary, did nothing. The fact that Baal did nothing proves that he is imaginary.

What should we do today when, upon calling on God to show himself, nothing ever happens? As we saw in proof #1 and proof #2, praying to God has absolutely no effect. Asking God to display any sort of supernatural force in public (like, say, lighting a fire) has absolutely no effect. God has absolutely no effect in our world today.

What we should do is exactly what the people in the Bible did with Baal. The lack of any evidence for God's existence should lead us to the obvious conclusion that God is imaginary, just like Baal is imaginary.

Understanding that God is imaginary, should we slaughter all of God's false prophets like they did in the Bible? Should we kill the Pope along with all priests, ministers, pastors, imams and rabbis? No - that would be barbaric and inhuman. Any rational person knows that, unlike the inhuman barbarians depicted in the Bible.

God is imaginary, just like Baal. That is proven to us every day by God's complete and total failure to do anything in our world.

God promises to show people that come to him with a pure heart and mind. Few manage to find this state. The ones that do get the response. I speak from experience and know many others that have been to the well and drawn the water.

The problem is some people see "God" as the cruel, tyrannical homicidal maniac so evident throughout the Bible. Children are terrified of this monster. In the future, it will be serious crime to read dreadful stuff promoting fear - like from the Bible - into young minds.

Elaine Pagels wrote an extraordinary book: The Gnostic Gospels. It's about the 52 papyrus texts and other secret documents recovered from an earthenware jar in 1945, buried in the Egyptian desert near a town called Nag Hammadi. (Look it up.) These Gnostic Gospels never made it into the orthodox bible because they were considered heretical - even though some are written by the apostles themselves. It's obvious why they never made it. Here is an example (P18) which shows some Indian influence:

"... Abandon the search for God and the creation and other matters of a similar sort. Look for him by taking yourself as the starting point. Learn who it is within you who makes everything his own and says, 'My God, my mind, my thought, my soul, my body.' Learn the sources of sorrow, joy, love, hate ... If you carefully investigate these matters you will find him in yourself... "

As I learned in social archaeology, individuals see God as a reflection of themselves and their environment. If you are a terrible person or have a horrible situation your starting point is to see God as a monster. The second part of your post tells how to have your soul mature into where you are pure of mind and heart. At this point your view of God changes and your view of the world around you. God is within us all. Some kill that part of them and live a horrible life and perceive God and the world to be a reflection of themselves. Others kill the part of them that is horrible. It atrophies and becomes so anemic that it has no chance in the internal struggle to live as a reflection of a loving and forgiving God. The violent and vengeful God within you dies along with that part of you. This part of the gnostic gospels is right on the money. Christ came to take the priest or religious elder from between you and God. The religious elders don't want to lose their power so they are not always helpful, to say the least, when in comes to getting you to embrace the good one within and shun the evil one within us all. Your good should be musclebound while your bad should be too weak to raise its head. I guess a lot of people embrace their evil side to the point the good can't raise its head so the God they know is the horrible reflection of who they are.

I just picked my Dad up from the airport. He went to see a doctor who doesn't practice medicine as the AMA proscribes even though he is an MD. He has been searching for something since my Mom died last year. He wanted me to go but I knew I was already balanced and doing the right things to be healthy. He took my maternal uncle who is more like a brother to me since he was a baby when my parents got married. They both had disabling degenerating conditions medical science associates with old age. My Dad has spent most of the last few years in a wheelchair. I go and pick him up at the airport yesterday. He tells me of all the miracles this guy worked on the about 2 dozen people that attended. The blind gets their sight to start to return, the lame walk, cancer is kept in remission after medical science gave the death prognosis years ago (a returning patient)and many other chronic conditions healed. What this doctor did first was some kind of body energy balancing. He worked with everyone individually. Next they made a list of all the good events and traumatic events from their past. It was hate and a lack of forgiveness that was causing their conditions. They were taught how to love and forgive others and themselves for past events. There were some more parts to it but when my Dad was done I tell him that is just what Christ teaches. My Dad said that the generic words God and religion were used a lot. The problems those that believed themselves to be religious had was that they put religion between themselves and God. The correct flow is God to and fro man and man to and fro religion. When we got home the first thing my Dad did was put his wheelchair in storage. He has a condition known as DISH (diffuse idiopathic skeletal hypertosis). This is the abnormal growth of bone in the joints and along the spine in extreme cases. My Dads spine is fused into one bone except for 2 discs. His neck is one bone with a spur growing out about 10 inches that will eventually cut of the blood flow to his head. It is already hard for him to swallow. The only thing medicine suggests is an operation to remove only this bone which has a fatality rate of over 80% and the bone will just grow back. They have no idea what causes this condition. He met this doctor he saw over the weekend at a self help conference. The doctor said he could help and maybe cure his DISH. Anyway my Dad can move his neck up and down more than he has been able to for years. I talked to my uncle who experienced the same miraculous relief of his troubles. He has been not able to lift his arms because of shoulder issues. He reported that he is as strong as he was 30 years ago. He mentioned sort of a reverse view of the reflection I spoke of above. It is attraction. That you get returned to you what is in your mind. If you are trying to lose weight and all you can think of is how fat you are you will fail. If you think of a skinny you the pounds will melt off. If you think of God as horrible and vengeful that is who you become. Anyway there minds were causing their bodies to attack themselves because they couldn't forgive people and embrace love and give of themselves and their surplus. It was slowly killing them literally. My Dad's body was literally going to strangle itself.

Now you have to decide for yourself are you going to believe in love, forgiveness, brotherhood and charity as the God that dwells within you or are you going to have chronic illnesses when you get older caused by the hateful and vengeful God that lives within yourself. Which God do you honor with the your self image. Christ healed in the same manner as this doctor that got tired of treating peoples sick minds and souls with poisons to their bodies. Take care of the cause not the symptoms. Start to nourish the God within you that brings you life not the one who brings death and debilitation.

Or if you read the bible.

Reminds me of an old joke - A Christian is someone who believes bits and pieces of the bible. An atheist is someone who believes all of it. The more people I meet the more I see how true it is.

Nazgul! Howdy mate... Long time no see. Now all we need for the full set is MAZ to show up and it's just like old times. Unfortunately, you just missed Aslan... haven't seen him for a month here. I suspect he's gone to Rome, for confession sessions in the Vatican.
