    Default Truvia

I just began using the non-sugar sweetener called Truvia, which is made from the stevia leaf. Cargill and Coca Cola own the product. I've read they have been using it in Japan for 30 years. The FDA was reluctant to approve stevia based products until Coca Cola got into the act. I wonder if different companies' investment in Sucralose and Aspartame had anything to do with keeping it off the market until Coke got into the act? Do you guys who follow these things believe this is at last a safe sugar substitute?

Here is Dr. Mercola's examination of Stevia, including the negatives. Curiously, Mercola says that FDA approval may damage Stevia. It appears to come down to the same old consideration - whole plant extract or highly refined chemical >>

New York, NY [December 18, 2008]

    Truvia™ News

EFSA’s safety assessment marks important first step of European Union approval and availability of Truvia™ sweetener, zero-calorie sweetness from the stevia leaf.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) today published a Scientific Opinion, which confirms that steviol glycosides, sweeteners extracted from the stevia plant, are safe for use in foods and beverages and establishes an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for their safe consumption. Truvia™ tabletop sweetener, the U.S. market leader in the new category of stevia-based sweeteners is made with rebiana, which is 97% pure rebaudioside A, the best-tasting part of the stevia leaf and one of the steviol glycosides assessed by EFSA. Truvia™ rebiana, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar, opens up a whole new range of choices for food and beverage companies to create products with sweetness from a natural source without calories.

I recommend Stevia, but not the brand Truvia, if just on general principal. zg
