On a related subject, do you know how Abraham and heroin are related?

Our soldiers don't look like they are there to destroy the poppies, rather to protect them. zg

    Default strategic point

I always wanted to write the pentagon about spraying the fields with defoiliant to eradicate the crops. If you destroy the tailaban's source of income along with the main purpose of subjigation of the villages and farms you don't need to defend squat. I have long held this belief as a cure for the scourge that plagues this afgan country.

Wake up Pal - the explosion of Poppy was one of the important reasons we are there now, part of the plan. Previously the Taliban had all but eradicated the Poppies, which was unacceptable to US and UK. zg

Yeah, that's an idea. Lines of B52 bombers spraying Agent Orange, (Monsanto's Roundup) all along the rich farming riverbed areas, all over Afghan.

That should render vast areas sterile for quite a while, and show the peasants who's boss. Hey, wait a minute, didn't you already try that in Vietnam? Was it a success? Sure, it killed everything green. And it almost killed a relative of mine, when the wave of bombers was 10 Kilometres off course, and sprayed his company with friendly Agent Orange Fire. All his body hair fell out. For the next couple of decades after that he suffered from blinding headaches and sores that would not heal.

It kills all aquatic life, and causes vast numbers of related cancers, tumors and gene damage. It has many negative effects for future decades. Is this what you are advocating for this country whose mostly primitive farmers are paid little to produce the raw opium?

"Now you can understand why there is a massive explosion of cheap
heroin available coming in courtesy of the (cash-strapped) CIA."

    Excerpt from Connect The Dots
GARMSER, Afghanistan — The Marines of Bravo Company’s 1st Pla toon sleep beside a grove of pop pies. Troops in the 2nd Pla*toon play fully swat at the heavy opium bulbs while walk ing through the fields. Afghan labor ers scrap ing the plant’s gooey resin smile and wave.

Last week, the 24th Marine Expe di tionary Unit moved into south*ern Hel mand province, the world’s largest opium poppy-growing region, and now find them selves sur rounded by green fields of the ille gal plants that pro duce the main ingre di ent of heroin.

The Taliban, whose fight ers are exchang ing daily fire with the Marines in Garmser, derives up to $100 mil lion a year from the poppy har vest by tax ing farm ers and charg ing safe pas sage fees — money that will buy weapons for use against U.S., NATO and Afghan troops.

Yet the Marines are not destroy ing the plants. In fact, they are reas sur ing vil lagers the pop pies won’t be touched. Amer i can com man ders say the Marines would only alien ate peo ple and drive them to take up arms if they elim i nated the impov er ished Afghans’ only source of income.

Many Marines in the field are scratch ing their heads over the sit u*a tion.

Simple solution - establish a regulatory framework where the penalties for going "freelance" are severe, buy up all of the crops produced at guaranteed prices, use a proportion to manufacture bona-fide medical products, destroy the remainder. It'd still be a lot cheaper than the $/£000,000,000s being spent on military operations in Afghanistan. Perhaps it's already happening and we don't know about it - hence the lack of action in destroying the crops before they are harvested?

Damn, Jim. Don't you realize that your procrastination has cost hundreds of lives and billions of dollars. Just what are you waiting for?
Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out just how far one can go.
