If it hasn't gone the way of Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany, it sure is teetering on the brink. America is a nation in deepening crisis, a nation whose leaders repeatedly plunge their citizens into, and make them pay for, serial wars abroad, while stealing their liberties at home. USA has become a country that trashes its citizens (New Orleans), tortures its enemies(Abu Ghraib), threatens other nations with nuclear fire (Iran), flouts international treaties (UN Charter re Iraq), and spies on (FISA), and intimidates, its critics(No Fly). Americans that can clearly see the totalitarian machinations of Vladimir Putin in Russia and Hu Jintao in China are blind to the fascism threatening to envelop them as well.

Webster's defines fascism as "a totalitarian governmental system led by a dictator and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism, militarism, and often racism." A comparison of 20th century fascist and communist regimes with President Bush's USA indicates the machinery for a full-blown totalitarian takeover is now in place, even if no coup has occurred. As Naomi Wolf writes in "The End of America"(Chelsea Green) the 2007 Defense Authorization Bill's Section 333 allows the president "to declare martial law and take charge of the National Guard troops without the permission of a governor when 'public order' has been lost" and to "send the guard into our streets during a public health emergency, terrorist attack or 'other condition.'

" The enabling crowbar was the Military Commissions Act of 2006. It gives the president authority to set up his own system for bringing alien combatants to trial while denying them protection of the Geneva Conventions. "The president and his lawyers now claim the authority to designate any American citizen he chooses as being an 'enemy combatant,'" Wolf writes of power usurpation that characterized the post-World War One epoch in Europe and Asia.

Is that a truism, or just a cynical remark. Sometimes the majority is wrong, and that may be why we have an electoral college, although it has never come into play where the electors did not vote for whom the voters voted. A democracy takes the chance that the majority will usually get it right. There's not much alternative.

    The Majority

    Don Stott
The majority of votes elects a President. Sort of, anyway, but the electoral college is another subject. Nevertheless, it is a majority of voters which will elect a Congressman, Mayor, Councilman, Senator, Governor, or what have you. The so-called 'democratic' method of government, which America is not supposed to be, means that a majority of the populace controls the minority. 49.9% are governed by 51.1%. As a famous man once said, this may be the best way. In my opinion, the majority is usually wrong.

If you are a Biblical reader, the Bible is full of the majority being wrong. The Israelites were in the minority. Noah was in the minority. Jesus was in the minority, as were his disciples and apostles. Lot was in the minority, and it seems to be, that in Scripture, that the minority is always right.

    Default Republic vs Democracy

The US is not a Democracy, it is a Republic. So the US should not suffer the tyrany of the majority.

It is a form of democracy. It is a representative democracy, also known as a republic.

Majority counts for a lot even in a republic, for example the use of referendum. Also. it is the majority of votes in each state that the electoral college uses to cast its votes (so far anyway). It is also the majority of votes in states and districts that elect senators and representatives. So if there is tyranny in majorities then this country as a republic must be full of tyranny.

In our Congress, even though the minority has a say, it often suffers the tyranny of the majority, as some might argue happened last week when the majority turned off the lights.

Where were you about 4 years ago? Miss the whole Gore/Bush thing?

If not officially fascist yet, we are certainly drifting that direction (right), and at this point seem a little Imperialist to me.

In the 1930's the Fascists marched. In the 2030's they will backpack.

The closest we have to fascists are the environmentalists, looking to micromanage our lives using their superstitions, with an end result of the West reverting to Third World standards. They have already succeeded in imposing dietary requirements on adults in major cities. They're coming after our cars now, so we have to be dependent on trains that may or may not run on time.

By God and the Second Amendment, they won't get my meat or my truck without a fight!
