(Washington, DC, July 2, 2008) Human Rights Watch today welcomed reports that 15 hostages that had been held for several years by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have been rescued. Human Rights Watch called on the FARC to immediately and unconditionally release hundreds of others still being held. According to press reports, the hostages rescued in an operation by Colombian security forces today include former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, who in a recently released video appeared to be in very poor health, three US citizens and 11 other Colombians.

"The FARC had been holding these people hostage for years, in some of the most miserable and inhumane conditions," said Jos Miguel Vivanco, Americas director at Human Rights Watch. "It's wonderful that these hostages will finally rejoin their families."

Human Rights Watch added that, in light of reports that there were no civilian casualties, the Colombian security forces should be commended for carrying out an effective mission that respected international humanitarian law.

However, Human Rights Watch expressed concern over the lives and well-being of the hundreds of other hostages that the FARC continues to hold for ransom or political gain.

"The FARC's continued holding of hostages and systematic kidnappings amount to a crime against humanity that should be universally condemned," said Vivanco. "They should long ago have released all the hostages, and stopped inflicting so much pain on not only the hostages, but all their loved ones."

Mysterious faceless people spotted in UK's most high profile events

    Britain News.Net
    Thursday 3rd July, 2008 (ANI)

London, July 3 : Two mysterious faceless people have been spotted in some of the UK's A-list events like Wimbledon, Henley Regatta, the Harrods sale and Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball.

With a membrane of skin stretched tightly over their eyes, noses and mouths, the alien-like figures were most recently snapped 'watching' a match perched on Murray Mount at Wimbledon.

Close inspection of the pictures rules out an alien invasion - small perforations around the eye areas of the masks allow the people beneath to see the world outside.

The anonymous figures have provoked much speculation among Internet bloggers, desperate to guess what they are trying to achieve.

Lol If you can identify someone by their genitalia, you must be a woman, a urologist, a prison inmate, or a homosexual. I predict, next thing will be faceless streakers.

    Mission

The fact of the matter is, there are good things happening in Iraq. There are good people working hard every day to make a difference for the future of Iraq. Iraqi women, men, and children lived under an oppressive ruler for over 30 years. The transition to a free world and a brand new chance on life is stressful and difficult. But the end result is a better way of life and a better world. Learn about a better future here. Thank you for visiting.

    Default terrorist or insane man?

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon headed a chorus of international condemnations of Wednesday's terrorist attack in Jerusalem, sending his condolences to the families of the three people killed.

His statement on Thursday followed a letter from the Israeli Mission to the UN, demanding that the Security Council "unequivocally and unconditionally condemn this terrorist attack and call for an end to all terrorism and violence."

The letter noted the timing of the attack, which claimed the lives of three Israelis and left dozens wounded, saying it threatened the prospects for "genuine peace, reconciliation, and mutual understanding."

The letter also recalled the council's failure to condemn the March 6 attack on the Mercaz Harav yeshiva that killed eight, in spite of the secretary general's personal condemnation.

"Surely there can be no excuse or explanation for this terrorist attack, or any terrorist attack for that matter," the letter stated. "Any attempt to justify terrorism - including by hindering its condemnation - is disingenuous, counterproductive, and morally reprehensible."

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also condemned the bulldozer rampage on Thursday, but he added a standard note of equivocation which has long aggrieved Israelis.

"As far as the Jerusalem attack is concerned, we condemn it," Abbas said during a visit to Slovenia. "We strongly condemn all attacks of violence regardless of source and shape. We wish for a peaceful solution based on negotiations and there is no other alternative but negotiations."

there has been no agreement scientifically on the degree to which DU pollutes anything. and if it did it certainly could be cleaned up. what easier contamination is there to pick up if it has radioactive residue? as far as illegality as far as i can see there is nothing illegal about it. what legal entity are you refering to?
    how did those million die?
